Shinjuku

Shinjuku is where Tokyo turns into structure: towers, corridors, crossings. This series looks at Tokyo's administrative verticality, then drifts toward Yoyogi where the skyline loosens. Photographed in September 2024.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building — Shinjuku, Tokyo

Completed in 1991 to a design by Kenzo Tange, the twin towers rise 243 metres above Shinjuku, their concrete façade grid modelled on the logic of an integrated circuit board. Free public observatories occupy both towers; in the north tower, an upright piano by Yayoi Kusama — yellow with black polka dots — stands against the glass.

Nearby landmarks:

  • Shinjuku Park Tower - To the south
  • NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building - to the southeast; identifiable by its prominent clock tower
  • Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower - to the northeast; a braided elliptical skyscraper housing three academic institutions
  • Keio Plaza Hotel - to the east; one of the first skyscrapers built in Shinjuku, predating the metropolitan building by nearly two decades
