Josefov Old Jewish Cemetery

A quiet enclosure in Josefov where centuries compress into stone: moss, inscriptions, winter light, and restraint. Prague, 2023.

Josefov Old Jewish Cemetery

Burials took place here from the 15th century until 1787. Space was scarce, so graves were layered over time—one reason the tombstones feel like a crowded forest of angles.

Around 12,000 tombstones remain visible today. This place is an invitation to quiet respect, and a reminder of Prague’s Jewish continuity across centuries.

Signs & material

From afar: a field of angles.
Up close: carved Hebrew, worn edges, and recurring symbols—work reduced to texture, rhythm, and time.

City beyond the stones.
