Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown — Kannai, Yokohama

Established in the mid-nineteenth century around the port of Yokohama, this is the largest Chinatown in Japan and one of the oldest in Asia. Ornate ceremonial gates mark its boundaries; within, red-lacquered façades and temple courtyards sit alongside merchant streets active since the Meiji opening of the port. The neighbourhood has operated continuously for over 150 years, retaining its function as both a working commercial district and a place of communal worship.
